MYG Achievement Award FY06/07
By Chee Hooi & Marn Chee

Way back in 1994, MYG Chairperson Cheng San proposed to set up a new MYG project to help people with intellectual disabilities in the western part of Singapore. It was not an easy task. Due to budget constraints, it had to be run as an ‘illegitimate’ MYG project from 1994 to 1997. However, there was this person who attended MYG Central Committee during those three years to represent this project, updating MYG on the progress and issues encountered. In 1997, MINDS EXCO finally approved the 5th MYG project and West End (WE) was finally inaugurated on 7 Feb 1998. The hard work put forth by this man for three consecutive years finally bore fruits. His perseverance and commitment is a real model for many volunteers.

From 1998 to present, he has continued to contribute to both WE project and MYG. He has assumed positions as chairperson, Trainee Recruitment Office of WE and ACID programmer. He moved on to take up the position of MYG Vice Chairperson in 1999/ 2000. He has also helped out in the training, publicity and publication committees. Even now that he and his wife are awaiting the arrival of their first born baby, he is also helping out in the MYG Renaming Task Force.

Altogether, he has been volunteering in the social sector for more than 17 years, of which 13 years were with MYG. We believe we will continue to see him around in MYG for many years to come.

These are what some fellow volunteers have to say about him:

    Yi Quan :
"He is the pioneer, the advocate and the grandfather. Without him, there might still be WE project, but there would be many less inspired volunteers and grateful trainees. WE’s motto of: 'Together we grow' resonated deeply with his own philosophy. His energy in volunteer work is boundless. Like a busy ant, he embarked on initiatives that helped make the work of WE relevant. Over the years, his approachable and patient personality helps instill into every volunteer a very positive experience and his exemplary attitude inspires countless people within WE. These virtues earned him the reputation of 'Ah Gong' among the 3rd generation volunteers who held high regards to his vision, wisdom, patience and advocacy."

    Jaslyn :
"He never fails to send sms to the volunteers who organized events at project or MYG level, after every event. Every word text was sincere and encouraging."

    Tionghua:
"He makes me feel welcome the moment I joined MYG. He went all length to assist the trainees through constant improvisation of our service."

    Palm :
"Our ‘Ah Gong’, no words to describe his drive and passion. His actions speak volumes of his contributions to MYG and WE. He truly deserves the MYG Achievement Award!"

This person is none other than Huck Sun from MYG WE Project.
