ACID 2006

The Prelude
ACID 2006 was an event much anticipated by everyone in the MYG family. This was my 2nd year participating as an attached volunteer.
The theme this year was "Rainbow of my Heart", signifying the series of colorful and vibrant activities the camp committee had in line for
the trainees.
The 1st night saw the different project groups streaming into The Chinese High School hall carrying their bags and everyone trying to
outtalk one another in the sea of familiar faces. The chaos quickly settled as our Camp Chairperson, Pamela took over and the huge
assembly was divided into 7 groups named by the colors of the rainbow. Names were exchanged and some ice breaker games were
played. Each group also accomplished the decoration of their group banner with the guidance of the GL.
The next day started with morning exercise followed by a good breakfast. The 1st highlight of the day was the get away to Castle Beach
at East Coast Park. This was a special activity organized by the committee with help from Mr Alvin Lee, the Castle Beach person in
charge. Under clear, blue skies, the volunteers guided their group trainees in building sandcastles using simple tools, bare hands and of
course, sand and water. Most trainees really enjoyed this entirely new experience.
Dinner was buffet followed by barbeque. On one side of the canteen, trainees and volunteers crowded together to grill hotdogs, chicken
wings and satay while on the other side, there was another group queuing for the yummy ice cream. Finally, we had our long awaited
Variety Night! After the "campfire" was lighted by Pamela and Huafang, trainees adorned with the party hats and accessories (made by
them during the morning program) then sang to their hearts content songs like "Top of the World" and "Country Road" which were
played by a large ensemble of guitarists. Spirits were lifted and then everyone got onto their feet ready for the series of dance like Para
Para which was led by the Camp Committee Vice Chairperson, Weili. The night was filled with fun, laughter and entertainment.
Everyone would agree that without fail, ACID 2006 had brought together hearts and minds in the MYG family and given us many fond
memories. In the short 3 days, new friends were made and valuable life lessons learnt. This was a special annual event for the trainees
which would have been impossible, if not for the tremendous efforts of the organizing camp committee, the spontaneous participation of
the volunteers from 6 different project groups, the NUS and NTU welfare clubs and the various secondary schools involved and of
course the support from The Chinese High School in allowing the use of the premise. Everyone plays a part in making a difference, I can
truly understand that.
