Giving the Gift of Time
By Kwan Li Juan, AMK
I started voluntary work with the objective of learning what compassion is. After
two years of being a leader as a student councillor, I was determined to try a "different thing",
hoping that it will add another perspective to my life. This time round, it is serving those who
are in need.
Throughout my voluntary experience in MINDS, I am inspired by senior volunteers
who are deeply committed in their work. They have showed me that compassion is not being
about empathizing, but rather, to empathize and do something about the situation. Everyone,
in their own extent, is able to help those in need through monetary means. However,
volunteerism is about giving the gift of time. In exchange, it has added much meaning to my
life.
After volunteering for a year, I was asked to take on the role of a group leader. It is
a challenging role, nevertheless, a learning opportunity for me. Communication is an essential
skill which I am still learning. It involves building relationships with the trainees, parents and
fellow volunteers on an individual basis which requires one to "go down to a very personal
level". It has been my wish to achieve this in order to cater to the individual needs of the
trainees. At this point of time, I have much to learn.
Sometimes, it can be tiring and difficult to plan programmes every week. Despite that, I have
found the perseverance to work hard through witnessing parental love for the trainees as
well as strength from God.
Volunteering has enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of the virtue of
compassion. It requires one to play a dual role of showing concern for others and listening
to their concerns, a process of how one gives this gift of time...
