The Meaning of "Voluntary Work"
By Student volunteer, West End

The meaning of "voluntary work", initially just means accumulating the number of school CIP (Community Involvement Program) hours required. However, after a few attempts in volunteering, it has a new meaning to me now.

Taking care of the trainees and understanding their background and mood swings have taught me not to take the simple things in life for granted, and to be thankful for what I have. It has also taught me to be more patient with not only my family and friends but also new people I meet. Initially I was unsure of how to keep interacting with the trainees. But gradually, I warmed up and became friends with them.

Being patient is often a challenge to me as I have a short temper. A task like counting money may seem simple to most of us but to trainees, it may not. Therefore it was initially quite difficult for me to teach as I have to be very patient and not get frustrated. Furthermore, I was worried they might not like my teaching method or tone of voice I have used. Hence I have to learn to be very careful and patient.

But eventually, my efforts paid off. It is really comforting to know that trainees remember the skills you have taught them, such as telling the time and counting money. The smiles and laughter I got when they have accomplished what I have taught are really heartening. It just goes to show that the effort and time you've put in are much appreciated. Despite heavy studies commitments, voluntary work shall be integrated into my life as it gives me much pleasure and great sense of satisfaction to be able to lend a helping hand and make a difference to others' lives.
