Reach Out Camp 2004
By Yap Simin, RO

On 16th-17th October 2004, Reach Out project (RO) had an exciting Outdoor Adventure Camp at Labrador MOE Adventure Centre. It was not the first time that RO had overnight camps but it was first where both members and volunteers challenged the pull of gravity together.

The theme of our camp was “First Step” and indeed there were many “Firsts” for RO. During the 2-day camp, we climbed 4-storey high rock walls, walked across a 2-storey high balancing log and a broken bridge, and played flying fork that spanned across the entire width of the field! One could never imagine how happy the volunteers were as we watched our members conquer their fear of heights with such courage and confidence.

For the first time in RO history, we released our very own ‘Kong Ming lanterns’ during the campfire. Accompanied with the song ‘When you wished upon a star’, we watched the ‘lanterns’ rise slowly and gracefully into the night sky, carrying with them the blessings that we had for RO. The ‘lanterns’ rose so high up among the clouds that it seemed like all of our well wishes have been transformed into the stars in the sky! The feeling was simply indescribable.

Planning the camp was a very challenging job considering the physical and health conditions, and ages of our members but I am very proud to say that my camp committee members (Charles, Huixin, Jackie, Nancy, Paulyn, Weijia, Weili and Yingjie) have done an excellent job! The camp would not have been so successful without any one of you. Thanks for helping to create such a memorable RO camp 2004!
